Helmut Newton for Vogue Magazine in 1964

Helmut Newton, photographer for Vogue was born in 1920 in Berlin. He lived all over the western world and made some excellent photographs. This one was made for Vogue Australia.

In 2004 Helmut Newton died in Los Angeles.

Inside Out – Anton Corbijn

The famous Dutch Photographer Anton Corbijn is himself in an intimate portrait about is life called Inside Out. The documentary was made by Klaartje Quirijns who followed him a long time. I am a little late to name this film now but I’ve just seen it lately. I liked it a lot. It gives a good insight in his drive and passion for photography, film and design. But also on what he had to give up in his personal life to become what he is today. It felt to me as he is a little lonely. A lot of photographers are a little on his own because they see things other people don’t see. For Anton Corbijn this was very clear according to the film. An interesting documentary of a great photographer. If you have the chance go look at it. It can be downloaded now on iTunes or buy it on DVD. It’s worthwhile if you love life, and photography!

Rolling Stones 50 years of Rock and Roll

Photo by Anton Corbijn. Taken in 1985 in his hotel room with light falling in from the window. In his very large pupils you can actually make out my silhouette. It was a very brief shoot but one of the most satisfying ever. It is also worth noting that this photo was taken well before the TUTU album shoot by Irving Penn and it has become one of my most well- known photographs.

Travel Photography: Death Valley

Most people think of Death Valley as a flat featureless desert of parched broken land inhabited by scorpions and rattlesnakes. Last week I visited Yosemite National Park in California. It was a great opportunity I arranged by myself. What a wonderfull experience and what a great privilege to be at Yosemite. But just one thing….I realized that Ansel Adams had a very easy job to make such great photo’s as he did. The nature in the park is just so beautiful that with a good eye and sense for beauty it’s very easy to shoot great photo’s. The subjects there are almost always great and oh so beautiful.

Anyway, enjoy life and beauty as much as you can!

The story of this nanny who has now wowed the world with her photography, and who incidentally recorded some of the most interesting marvels and peculiarities of Urban America in the second half of the twentieth century is seemingly beyond belief. Vivian Maier’s body of work is being archived and cataloged for the enjoyment of others and for future generations. A great initiative!

This is a beautiful car and a beautiful black and white video, with great photography. Only, what a dumb man! Enjoy it!
